Decorating tips for inviting the fresh
invigorating spirit of spring
and summer  into your home

Exterior

v Put 5-7 primulas in a pot and place outside your front door – use one colour for maximum impact

v Replace your winter door wreath with 7 to 9 stems of pussy willows tied together with a raffia or a ribbon in a colour complementary to your door or house colour

v Place a wooden bench or twig chair in a quiet area of the garden beside a fragrant spring blooming shrub

v Set up a container water feature close to your entryway

Interior

v Roll up dark or heavy area rugs and replace with natural sisal or light coloured rugs.

v Add toss cushions in fresh, inspiring colours that pop against your sofa or chairs.  For example, use pink with a chocolate sofa; pale lime and pale aqua with neutral coloured seating or use a brighter version of your current accent colour (tangerine instead of peach).

v Put away your heavy drapes and put up gossamer sheers for an instant lift.

v Replace a piece of art with a print that fills you with joy (store your existing art in a dry place such as the back of a closet or under a bed).

v Bring flowers into your home every week.  Cut Forsythia, Magnolia or other spring blooming branches and set in a beautiful tall vase.  No garden?  Buy from a local florist or purchase realistic silk stems from Chintz & Company, Pier One, Homesense, etc.

v Set a fragrant pillar candle on a pretty dish surrounded by smooth stones.

v Pare down your accessories to create negative space that will translate into a light and airy atmosphere.

v Put away the heavy duvet cover and replace with a breezy, floral or striped cotton cover.  Add toss cushions in coordinating colours that bring to mind the fresh, crispness of the outdoors (think aqua, and sand, pale greens and lilac).
